TEA TREE

The precious oil of a plant that comes from far away

The Melaleuca alternifolia, a tree native to Australia, arrived in Europe in the 18th century, imported by the English explorer James Cook, who in 1770 landed with his ship on the northern coast of that continent. Melaleuca, from the Greek mélas and leukòs, black and white, describes the color of the bark: dark the old one of the trunk, clear that of the younger branches.

Tea tree is instead the western name given to him by Cook and his sailors, who used their leaves to prepare an aromatic tea to drink as a substitute for tea. Just those leaves always used by the Australian aborigines not only as an ancient and indispensable remedy of traditional medicine, but also to wrap food, especially meat, to prolong its conservation.
Initially, the precious virtues of this beautiful plant, used in Europe only as an ornament of gardens, were not understood, but subsequent studies of ethnobotany, and modern experiments today, have shown in the essential oil, extracted by distillation with water vapor from the leaves and from the sprigs and known to all as Tea tree oil, responsible for the precious properties of the plant.
Erbamea proposes two food supplements, Tea tree organic essential oil and Tea tree tablets.
